Kohima, Feb 13 (WE THE NAGAS): The Kohima district administration on Sunday carried out an aerial survey to assess the ongoing forest fire in Dzükou Valley and Mt. Japfü.
The survey revealed that the southern, eastern, and western ranges of Dzükou Valley have largely been burnt, with only residual smoke visible in certain areas. However, active flames continue to burn on the northern face near Mt. Japfü, raising serious concerns about the fire spreading towards Mt. Kahu and potentially re-entering unburnt areas of Dzükou Valley.
Officials stated that the situation remains critical in the northern sector, and immediate intervention is required to prevent further escalation. The team has recommended the urgent deployment of Indian Air Force helicopters equipped with Bambi Buckets for aerial water-dousing operations to contain the blaze effectively in inaccessible terrain.
Meanwhile, the Kigwema Youth Organisation has informed that trekking to Mt. Japfü has been temporarily suspended until the situation is brought under control. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the affected areas and cooperate with firefighting efforts.
The administration continues to monitor the situation closely while coordinating with relevant agencies to prevent further damage to the ecologically sensitive region.
