𝐊𝐨𝐡𝐢𝐦𝐚, 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟔 (𝐖𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐍𝐀𝐆𝐀𝐒): The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has strongly opposed any attempt to introduce or recite Vande Mataram in institutions across Nagaland, stating that such a move undermines the constitutional safeguards and the unique socio-religious identity of the Naga people.

In a press statement, the Federation expressed deep displeasure and strongly condemned remarks made by BJP legislator Temjen Imna Along regarding the recitation of Vande Mataram in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

The NSF stated that despite its earlier opposition expressed on February 20, 2026, the legislator continues to justify the normalization of the song in institutions within the state. The Federation recalled that it had categorically opposed directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs mandating the playing or singing of Vande Mataram before the National Anthem during certain official functions and warned against extending such directives to educational institutions.

According to the NSF, the song carries religious connotations rooted in the worship of Hindu deities, which it said does not align with the faith and cultural practices of the Naga people. It stated that enforcing the recitation of the song in the Assembly or in public institutions would violate the spirit and safeguards provided under Article 371(A) of the Constitution, which protects the religious and social practices of Nagas.

The Federation also cautioned all its federating units and subordinate bodies to remain vigilant and ensure that such practices are not allowed within their respective jurisdictions. It further stated that if any authority attempts to impose the song, concerned units should respond appropriately to defend the rights and dignity of the Naga people.
